Tips on Hiring Designers Online

By Lena Harrington

Design is something that can be rather costly, and many small businesses do not have the resources to hire their own in-house designer, at least not at first. The best option if you find yourself in this situation is to hire freelancers on the Internet. This is advantageous to you in several ways. First, you can save money by paying only for services you require on an as-needed basis. In addition, by hiring freelance designers, your business will have flashy, eye-catching pieces that only professionals can create.

As a business owner, you may be inclined to try designing products on your own as this will save you the most money, but unless you have a lot of creative and artistic talent, it is best to avoid this urge. The good news is that the Internet allows you to hire very competent designers even if you have a relatively modest budget. Here are some websites you can turn to if you are interested in hiring a designer online:

  1. Elance
This is one of the oldest and most well-known sites that provides a marketplace of freelancer who will bid on any work you post. Since Elance is a comprehensive community with tons of features, you can access ratings and review of freelancers and view previous projects they have worked on. On larger projects, you can create milestones and schedule payments whenever a milestone is reached. To find out more about how Elance works, check out the video below:

  2. Odesk
Since you have to create a detailed proposal for any design project you hire a designer for, you might as well post your project on multiple sites instead of just Elance. Fortunately, there are plenty of sites you can post your proposal on, but Odesk is probably your best bet as it is the largest freelance site, surpassing even the size of Elance. In addition, Odesk works very similarly to Elance, so if you know how to use one, you will have no problem using the other.

  3. Fiverr
Fiverr should only be used for small design tasks, as most of the jobs posted are done for $5 (hence the name of the site). If you have a very simple project, such as creating a web banner or making small fixes or edits to an existing file, you might be able to find someone on Fiverr to do the work.

  4. Design Services Offered by Printing Companies
Several online printing companies offer design services at competitive rates. Examples of companies that do this are Overnight Prints and Uprinting. Such services are often ideal if you want to create a comprehensive identity package that includes a logo, letterhead, business cards, and other business essentials.

Regardless of what method you use to hire your designer, make sure you view a portfolio of their sample work before hiring them. Since design is highly subjective, even if a designer is highly rated, if their style does not match what you are looking for, you may end up being disappointed. Another thing you should do is check to make sure the designer you are hiring has experience designing the type of material you want produced. If you use Odesk or Elance, it should be easy to view prior projects the designer has worked on. If you are hiring someone for brochure work, it is obviously in your best interest to hire a designer who has worked on many similar brochure projects in the past.
